Number 109: Pink Lady on the Sill

I put this apple on my windowsill for this painting.  The spring blossoms outside are beautiful, but the apple is the focal point.  I keep coming back to apples because I'm not satisfied with my apple paintings yet. It just doesn't seem like an apple should be so hard to paint, but I haven't succeeded yet.

Apples look so easy but I'm finding them very hard.  These are mostly red, but there is some green and although I wanted to do them in a more impressionistic style I still want them to look like apples. So I will leave it to the viewer.  What do you think?

I thought I would paint something simple today, but appearances are deceiving.  It's a lot harder to paint apples than I thought it would be.  I love this arrangement though.  The two apples seem to be leaning into each other, almost like a long-married couple.

I love this reference photo, especially the gauzy cloth draped on the table and the apples set in random spots to give the eye places to land. Cloth is hard to paint, but I’m excited to see how well this came out.

Today's challenge is this basket of vegetables. The green peppers a bit past it's prime, but the yellow pepper and tomatoes are at the peak of ripeness.  The biggest challenge is some of the detailing in the basket. Sometimes there is a style war going on inside me.  I love realistic paintings but I don't want to be just a camera, I want to evoke emotions with my paintings, even with the simplest subjects.

Today's painting is a lovely basket full of my favorite fruit, apples.  These are golden delicious apples and I'm trying to use reds and purples in the shadow areas of the apples even though I don't see those colors.  I'm trying to keep my paintings lively and exciting to look at.

I'm an fine art artist in Raleigh, North Carolina.  I need a paintbrush in my hand to feel complete and I invite you to follow me on my art journey. Everyday brings new ideas and projects... there simply is not enough time... On December 1, 2012, I joined the community of artists who paint a painting each and every day. I haven't been able to keep up with the daily painting, but I'm trying hard to keep my paintbrushes busy.
