Number 187: Nick

I once shared a house with a dog show photographer who had several large breed dogs, one of whom was a purebred Rottweiler with a long official name, but who's everyday name was Nick. Rottweilers are often a misunderstood breed; all dogs reflect, in part, how they are treated and Nick was loved and cared for and in turn was a loving and loyal friend.   5 x 7 inch.

I couldn't resist trying to capture this bulldog asleep on the beach from a batch of reference photos. I concentrated on keeping my brushstrokes to a minimum and not overworking the details and I'm pleased with the results.

This sweet little cat looks very wary, but is more thirsty than scared and goes for it!  I have a new admiration for all the pet portrait artists out there.  This is a steep learning curve for me, but I'm putting my efforts out for all to see.  Hopefully you will find some value in this painting.

This week is going to be cat and dog week.  I have to admit some of my previous animal paintings make me cringe, but I want to continue to challenge myself.  This reference photo of this adorable puppy caught my attention.  Let's see what I can do with it.

I occasionally dog sit for a family that befriended a deer family one year and now they are frequent visitors to their backyard.  They acquiesced to my photo shoot and here is my first try at painting deer.

My friend took this picture of me taking pictures one very chilly afternoon in February.  The critter on the other side of the fence came over to visit.

I don't have any cats right now, but there was a time when two cats lived with my daughter and I.  Many a morning I would wake up to one or the other and sometimes both of them snuggled in next to me under the covers.

I love photo references because its the only way the critters will stay still enough for me to get a decent drawing which is really the foundation of all successful paintings.  I don't know if these are roosters or hens or one of each, but they were fun to paint.

I thought a portrait of this lovely cow would make a nice picture for today.  Portraiture of any subject is harder for me, but I can only get better with practice.

Are you ever satisfied with being fenced in?  I'm not.  I want to move outside my fences, both external and internal.  I want to try different media, new subjects and expand my skills trying new things.  Sometimes it's harder to break out of the external fences if money is a factor, so I'm concentrating on the internal fences.  I'm not going to be afraid to tackle painting subjects that are more difficult.

I'm an fine art artist in Raleigh, North Carolina.  I need a paintbrush in my hand to feel complete and I invite you to follow me on my art journey. Everyday brings new ideas and projects... there simply is not enough time... On December 1, 2012, I joined the community of artists who paint a painting each and every day. I haven't been able to keep up with the daily painting, but I'm trying hard to keep my paintbrushes busy.
