Number 192: Stone Bridge

For today's painting I chose a reference photo depicting a lovely stone bridge over a stream.  I wanted the bridge to be the focal point even though it's nestled among the foliage and there is not much change in value, but this is a lovely scene and I like it. 5 x 7 inches.

On the way to my parents house I pass many acres ringed with hay bales and have always thought they would be fun to paint.  I'm still trying hard not to over work the details and I am happy with this. 5 x 7 inches.

I love the sense of peace this scene evokes in me.  The soft muted mountains in the far background combined with the glow of light in the sky, make for a lovely vista.  5 x 7 in.

This fence post is falling and the wild flowers, weeds and grasses are taking over.  It's hard not to overwork the details, but I'm trying to keep to the spirit of impressionist painting.

"Impressionist art is a style in which the artist captures the image of an object as someone would see it if they just caught a glimpse of it." There is more to this definition, but I thought this captured the essence of the genre.  Since my daily paintings are an exercise in stretching and trying to find where I fit in the spectrum of paint styles (not that I have to label myself or fit in one style), this week's challenge is to remember this definition and paint in that style. Today's painting comes from my library of reference pictures, I was immediately attracted to this because of the way the light hit the grass and barn. This is my "impression" of the scene.  5 x 7 inches

Number 187: Nick

I once shared a house with a dog show photographer who had several large breed dogs, one of whom was a purebred Rottweiler with a long official name, but who's everyday name was Nick. Rottweilers are often a misunderstood breed; all dogs reflect, in part, how they are treated and Nick was loved and cared for and in turn was a loving and loyal friend.   5 x 7 inch.

I couldn't resist trying to capture this bulldog asleep on the beach from a batch of reference photos. I concentrated on keeping my brushstrokes to a minimum and not overworking the details and I'm pleased with the results.

This kitten is so comfortable in this cozy basket and looks, oh, so cute!  One of the many things I'm finding challenging this week is getting the color of the kitten's fur even remotely accurate. But, I think I captured the "cuteness factor."

This sweet little cat looks very wary, but is more thirsty than scared and goes for it!  I have a new admiration for all the pet portrait artists out there.  This is a steep learning curve for me, but I'm putting my efforts out for all to see.  Hopefully you will find some value in this painting.

This week is going to be cat and dog week.  I have to admit some of my previous animal paintings make me cringe, but I want to continue to challenge myself.  This reference photo of this adorable puppy caught my attention.  Let's see what I can do with it.

I'm an fine art artist in Raleigh, North Carolina.  I need a paintbrush in my hand to feel complete and I invite you to follow me on my art journey. Everyday brings new ideas and projects... there simply is not enough time... On December 1, 2012, I joined the community of artists who paint a painting each and every day. I haven't been able to keep up with the daily painting, but I'm trying hard to keep my paintbrushes busy.
